AI Customer Support & Helpdesk Automation

AI Customer Support & Helpdesk Automation

AI in customer support and internal helpdesks has moved from simple FAQ chatbots to autonomous agents that read a ticket, look up account or order information in connected systems, draft or send a reply, take an action (issuing a refund, updating a record), and escalate only genuinely ambiguous cases to a human. For an operations department, this category is relevant both for external customer service and for internal helpdesk functions like IT support or facilities requests. The pricing models vary more here than in most software categories and materially affect total cost: some vendors charge per agent seat (Zendesk, Freshdesk, roughly $19-$115/agent/month), some charge per automated resolution (eesel AI, Intercom Fin, roughly $0.40-$1.50 per resolved ticket), and a few blend both. A per-resolution model is usually cheaper for low-volume teams and a flat seat/platform fee is usually cheaper at high volume, so the right choice depends on realistic ticket-volume forecasts rather than the headline price. The other practical distinction is whether the AI is bundled into an existing helpdesk (Freddy inside Freshdesk, AI Agents inside Zendesk) versus a separate AI layer that sits on top of whatever helpdesk is already in place (eesel AI, some Intercom Fin deployments) — bundled AI is usually cheaper and simpler to turn on, while a separate layer offers more flexibility if the team doesn't want to switch its core ticketing system just to get better AI.
