AI Rapid Prototyping & Vibe Coding
This is the newest and fastest-moving category, and arguably the one changing the PO role most structurally: 'vibe coding' tools like Lovable, v0, and Cursor let a Product Owner go from an idea sitting in the backlog — often stuck there because engineering capacity is limited — to a working, clickable prototype in an afternoon, without writing code by hand. Lovable and v0 are the most PO-friendly entry points: describe the screen or flow in plain language, and the tool generates a real, functioning UI (and often working backend logic) that can be user-tested or shown to stakeholders instead of a static Figma mockup. Cursor sits a notch closer to engineering, acting as an AI pair-programmer inside a full codebase for POs who are comfortable going a little deeper. The genuine leverage here is validation speed: a hypothesis that used to require a two-week engineering spike to test can now be prototyped and put in front of five real users within a day, which changes which ideas even get considered. The trade-off to manage deliberately: these tools are metered by credits, not seats, so cost is unpredictable and scales with prompt complexity rather than headcount, and a vibe-coded prototype is explicitly disposable — treat it as a way to learn, not as production code, and be upfront with engineering about which artefacts are throwaway validation and which are meant to be built properly.
