AI Writing, PRDs & Documentation

AI Writing, PRDs & Documentation

Writing is the single most time-consuming, least differentiated part of the PO role — PRDs, user stories, acceptance criteria, release notes, stakeholder updates — and it's the category where general-purpose AI assistants like ChatGPT and Claude have had the most immediate, uncontroversial impact. Rather than starting a PRD from a blank page, a PO can feed in research notes, a rough outline, or a transcript of a customer call and get a structured first draft back in seconds, then spend their own time on the parts that need real judgement: trade-offs, edge cases, and the 'why' behind the decision. Notion AI takes a slightly different angle, working inside the team's existing documentation workspace so drafting, summarising and answering questions all happen where the docs already live, rather than in a separate chat window. The risk in this category is treating AI output as finished rather than a draft: a fluent-sounding PRD can still miss a critical edge case or misstate a requirement, so the discipline of having an engineer or designer sanity-check anything AI-drafted before it becomes a commitment doesn't go away. Used well, this category buys back hours every week that were previously spent on formatting and phrasing rather than on the substance of the decision.
