These consumer-facing tools sit outside the four walls of the clinic and help patients triage symptoms, decide whether a concern warrants a clinic visit, urgent care, or the ER, and prepare for and follow up on appointments. Structured symptom-checker engines (Ada Health, Buoy Health, K Health) ask a guided series of clinical questions — rather than simple keyword matching — and produce a list of possible conditions with next-step guidance, explicitly framed as an assessment rather than a diagnosis. A newer sub-category (Hedy) focuses on helping patients prepare questions for and understand the outcome of a doctor's visit. Health systems and payers often license the white-labeled version of these tools to reduce unnecessary ER/urgent-care utilization and to power 24/7 automated intake, scheduling, and follow-up messaging. Most consumer apps in this space are free or freemium for individual patients, while health-system licensing for population-wide deployment is sold as an enterprise annual contract.
